LEARN
Join us to learn the beautiful craft of timber frame carpentry. In this week-long workshop, we will cut and raise a small timber frame for an earthen cottage. While we will demonstrate power tool techniques, our emphasis will be on hand tool skills that can easily be taken home and put to use. Participants will be exposed to all the joinery involved in constructing a modest sized building. Our course schedule will include daytime hands-on learning of woodworking skills as we cut our frame, along with evening sessions where we will view slides and discuss a variety of topics relating to timber frame design and construction.

Participants will leave knowing how to:
• Draw out joinery on timbers using the traditional Square Rule layout system
• Cut mortise and tenon joints using hand tools
• Assemble and raise the frame

SUPPORTING A GOOD CAUSE
When completed, the cottage you will be working on will provide a retreat space to women artists and activists. Rental revenue from the cottage will support the Women of the Americas Sustainability Initiative (WASI), an action-oriented alliance of women leaders who construct, educate, organize, and advocate for strong and empowered communities through ecological design-build practices, with the aim of creating a socially and ecologically resilient world. The cottage, itself, will be completed by a crew of women.
Please note: You do not need to be a woman to participate in this training.

“My experience timber framing with Sarah Highland and Liz Johndrow was nothing short of transformative. Their gentle, supportive coaching and calm, quiet work site made room for a lot of deep learning. I was able to progress at my own pace and gain the confidence I needed to work on my own project back home. I look forward to working with them again.” Georgie Donais, 2010 workshop participant, The Peaceweavers, NY

INSTRUCTORS

Sarah Highland builds and designs with timber, clay, straw, brick, and slate. Her work is an exploration of how to create buildings that feel alive, and how to build community while building structures. As principal of Highland Artisan, she cuts timber frames, designs, and teaches workshops. In addition, she works with owner-builders and community groups as consultant and build leader.

Liz Johndrow has been exploring the world of cob, strawbale, adobe, earthen plasters and floor systems, and timber framing for several years. She particularly enjoys inspiring the empowerment of people of all ages and abilities to participate within this process, and the creation and celebration of community that often emerges. She frequently assists Sarah in timber framing workshops. www.earthenendeavors.com
